This sweet&sour zesty chutney is perfect for snacks and serves as a nice contrast to savory and spicy food. Never had it before? Try it with some spring rolls instead of the Sweet&Sour Chili Sauce, or in lieu of BBQ-Sauce. It really is a “Chutney” which literally means, that it’s finger-licking good!
I always like to keep some “Tamarind Purre with Seeds” on hand, because its so easy and quick to turn it into a delicious chutney, whenever you want to. However, you can just as well make it ahead of time and store it in the fridge for up to a week.
This recipe is adapted from my mother, who is the best expert on sauces I know and only takes about 5 minutes!
8 oz Tamarind purre with seeds
1 cup Water
1 cup Sugar
1/2 tsp Cumin powder
1/4 tsp Chili powder/flakes
1/4 tsp Ginger powder
Salt, to tasted
Mix the water and tamarind purre in a bowl and wash the tamarind by squeezing it in your hand. When the water is infused with the tamarind, remove the seeds.
Heat up the tamarind water in a saucepan over medium to high heat and bring to a boil.
Add the remaining ingredients and let simmer, until the sauce becomes thicker or the desired consistency is reached.
